Lea in “Bata, bata…pa’no ka ginawa?”

Lualhati Bautista is probably the most read Filipino novelist. Two of her books were made into movies with the main characters played by award-winning actress Vilma Santos. One of her characters, Lea Bustamante, has a very profound line, “sana sa tuwing nagtatalik ang mga tao, nagtatalik din ang kaluluwa nila.” She delivers this line after the two fathers of her two children threatened to take her children from her. She laments that she has made love to the two men but they have not reached the depths of her soul. Because if they had, they would find that more than anything in the world, she is a mother…. I have given homilies in weddings and have quoted Lea’s line but have not truly articulated how to touch someone’s soul. This is an attempt…
