I want to wake up just before the sun rises
So that I witness the darkness welcoming the light.
I want to breathe in the air that seeks to meet me
And know that it touched another creature during the night.
I need to rise up and remember
That there is a history I can only continue to write.
I need to speak of visions I dare to imagine
For my people, the children, and those who cry out for life.
I want my daughter to dance to the music she chooses
And my son to strum on his guitar and enchant all ages
I want a child to laugh at the sight of her mother’s face
And a father to find peace in his child’s embrace
I need to believe that there is more to life
Than the cycles of birthing and dying
I need to remember that life is a gift
For laughing, loving, and living.
