Why is life so fragile

Why is life so fragile?
Why must a butterfly’s wings be so thin?
Why must the water flow slowly down the mountains?
Why must the pollen and bees ride the wind?

Why is life so fragile?
Why must a child cry tears of fear in the night?
Why must a mother pull away from her children’s arms?
Why must a son be killed as he fights for what is right?

Why is life so fragile?
Why must a woman fear the men in her life?
Her father, her brother, her husband, even her son,
Who can she run to? How can she escape this very long night?

Why is life so fragile?
Why do we teach our children to hate instead of loving?
Why do we model competition instead of nurturing?
Why are we silent in the face of poverty and so much suffering?

Why is life so fragile?
Why can’t we find the words to make right what is wrong?
Why can’t we touch with tenderness instead of force?
Why can’t we silence the aggression emanating from our soul?

Who made life so fragile?
Is it God or is it the human being?
Is it Natures’s undeniable cycles of living and dying?
Or is our fragility from the apathy and all the senseless killing?
